The latest update Apple updates App Store Link-Out Guidelines in conformity to EU DMA. However, the costs remain very high.

Apple has updated its App Store's rules to ensure it is more in line with European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) However, the fees associated with Apple's changes remain high in accordance with an article published within The Verge.

The important changes are explained by way of six bullets on the Apple News as well as Updates page, and visitors are advised to look up an additional comprehensive explanation of the new features in their developer documentation.

A few highlights include advertising "offers to purchase products from any location they choose," developers being able to "use an actionable link that is tapped, clicked or scanned to travel to the destination they desire," and "Updated commercial terms used by apps that utilize the External Purchase link entitlement feature" are being developed to ensure that they are in accordance with changes that have been made to these capabilities."

The new rules will come into effect "this fall" (no further specific starting date has been established).

"Nearly-Endless 20 Percent Fee for Developers'

In the report of The Verge, "Apple provides a virtually unlimited 20 percent fee to developers with the latest EU update," the updates appear to give developers more options for linking to purchase options not accessible through the Apple App Store.

The costs associated with this new feature are so costly and restrictive it "it's impossible to imagine anyone using the technology. "

The reason for this is because the developers that opt-in to the StoreKit External Purchase Link Entitlement (EU) Addendum, the price of the addendum is an initial purchase charge of five in addition to the 20% Store Services charge that is applicable to "sales of digital products and services, across any platform, during a predetermined 12-month period beginning at the point of install and includes the update of applications and reinstalls."

The Verge informs us that apps that update or reinstall by the user resets the timer to twelve months for the store's annual charges. There's a myriad of other tools and programs which could lower costs such as the provision of third-party support, charging some auto-renewing subscriptions that are eligible, or having a developer account in Apple's small business program that caters to small-sized businesses. But, the annual fee of 12 months, which resets each updates or reinstallations can make the fees "endless."

An earlier TechCrunch piece that reads "Apple revises DMA conformity to allow App Store link-outs using fewer limitations as in addition to the new fee structure" further clarifies some particulars about Apple's distinctive terminology and fees. Both are traditional and modern. For example it states that"Store Services Fee" will be "Store Services Fee" will comprise "a 10 per cent normal commission or a discount commission of five per cent (e.g. developer commissions to users who are enrolled in the App Store's Small-Business Program) according to Apple's terms of service applicable to businesses; or an amount of 20 percent, and 7% discounts, in accordance with the current contract with Apple."

Details on fees for as well as both those Alternate Terms Addendum for apps within the EU and for the StoreKit External Purchase Link Entitlement (EU) Addendum can be found in the Commissions section on this Apple help page.
