The illustrator of a book, Soosh, talks about her fairytale illustrations.

Aug 6, 2022

While I was looking up Soosh to write this piece thoroughly, I came across her YouTube videos. If you've seen her work, you'll notice it's as if an old fairytale is reborn. By also adding her voice as a part of stories, she makes an all-encompassing experience bringing her fairytale characters to life. Continue reading, but ensure you stop by on her YouTube channel to sip some hot tea and prepare yourself for a magical fairytale evening.

We spoke to Soosh about the key for capturing those small daily moments in her work.

"Hello, I'm Soosh. I was raised and born by the people. I do not identify myself with any nation, race, religion or other. My life is spent watching people and myself and analyzing the specifics of every aspect. This is a difficult path. I didn't choose it intentionally, but I am doing the path. If it's conventional art education I don't have any.

Although I am aware that there are different ways of drawing and painting that are referred to as styles, I've never really given any thought to the kind that my drawing fit into. If I would try to come up with a word to define it, it's a "fairytale realistic" kind of style. But speaking frankly, no style.

I think the key to success, according to me is to observe through your heart as you can with your eyes. It might take some repetition to notice the small details, just like any other skill. It is important to be quiet for some time and completely present in the present moment. Pay attention. Pay attention, but not too much.

My primary focus has always been people. The way they express themselves, their mimics, their gestures, their kind acts, as well as the flaws they exhibit - all it's fascinating and intriguing to me. Then it's only a matter of time, some pencils, and some watercolour to dive into and create the everyday images in a paper."
