May 4, 2024

Jo Kelly isn't your average acting coach.

In reality, she doesn't use the phrase "teacher" even once "I don't do anything in the way of teaching people how to act" she adds. "I assist people in not acting."

Through experiential exercises, Jo coaches mainly actors as well as artists of all sorts and non artist "seekers" about how they can achieve inner freedom and to become their authentic self. This way, actors can stop acting and start being. "I would like to be a midwife more than a teacher, since I assist people in coming back to their true self and be renewed," she explains.

She believes that the success of an actor lies in their satisfaction and the ability in committing themselves fully to their role. "When your character is protected in full, the story and the public is affected," she explains.

Her unique way of coaching performers, she helps them to tap to their inner child's fascination, curiosity, and fun. What does this mean? They give truthful, alive and authentic performances.

In the year 2016, Jo transitioned from in-person coaching to establishing an online-based business through . Since, she's led three consecutive educational journeys, and she's provided over 8,000 individuals. The group has had amazing success since working with Jo, and have landed roles in some of the largest studios in the game like Netflix, HBO, Disney, Showtime, ABC Studios, and more.

Here's how she built an online company that she's passionate about:

She did her research

Jo was a unique path into acting.

Born in Belgium, she got her MBA before specializing on human resources management as well as psychosystemic psychology. Afterwards, she did corporate coaching. "The corporate world never felt as if it was my cup of tea," she shares. "I decided to drop everything, move to Paris and begin afresh. ."

A big part of her new beginnings was to try her hand at acting, something she was in the love of. She was a hard-working, passionate person and put all her time and money in acquiring the skills to be the most effective actor she could be.

Despite her devotion to the craft, she says she was a decent actor but not a top actor. As with other actors, she was plagued by stage fear. "Most of my actors had the same thing," she says. "We had all been very passionate, however when it was time to perform, we were afraid ."

The actress was curious to know the factors that prevented her, and other actors from becoming great actors. "My fascination turned into an obsession" the actress says. "I wanted to know the reason actors who are committed and devoted decrease when the time comes to play ."

In the following years, she researched how actors could feel blocked. Her study led to the conclusion that when kids play, they're at liberty. When adults engage in play the same way, they've been deprived of their independence due to societal conditioning. "When I realized this I took the remainder of my time really helping actors unlearn their conditioning in order to let them appear and act in the same way that they had previously," explains Jo.

She started her coaching

Jo's experiential research led her to explore different somatic tools and practices, which she then tried on others by private or group coaching back in early 2000. In the following years the business was named To Be Or Not To Act.

Then she realized the people she worked with were not able to demonstrate accountability. "No no matter how dedicated my colleagues were, they didn't have the capacity to show up everyday. Even though we had meetings three times a week however, there wasn't any accountability in-between sessions. People would drop the ball easily when they weren't with me." Jo says. Jo.

The idea was that online classes can help students remain consistent in their routine. Her online classes in the form of "journeys," and the initial journey that she guides people on will be The Reset: From Resistance to Freedom--which she developed in 2014. "I began to design The Reset so that I could hold people's hands through an entire 33 days," she explains.
"Since the site is online, users are able to do this at their own pace and set their own agenda."

It's Jo's belief that we were born with an authentic nature, but the societal norms force us to act as we think, feel, and act the way we do. According to her, the purpose of The Reset is for people to perform daily exercises that help to remove their conditioned behavior and revert back to their original instincts. Each day in The Reset, Jo offers recorded exercises. Additionally, she offers 2 Q&A as well as two hours of working in groups via pods as well as a semi-Q&A session where Jo answers frequently asked questions on the private Facebook group.

The flexibility offered by an online journey allows Jo's members to do the sessions at any point at any time, whether they wake up, before they sleep, or whenever they have some time. "The greatest thing is that they can make the sessions fit into their lives," she explains.

She built an online business which gave her the flexibility to lead a lifestyle

When Jo first began her own online Reset journey, she had every day a session available posted on her website. In the following years she changed to Reset after being encouraged to join the site by her coach. "You people know what you're doing, and I don't" she says with a smile.

After moving into the coaching online space Jo's lifestyle has changed. When she conducted her interview with us, she was calling from the hospital where she was with her daughter. "Eight years ago my daughter was born with a genetic specification and is in need of hospital visits every month," she shares.

" It allows me to become a mother and manage the rest of my own life, while maintaining an online business operating, even while in the hospital as my daughter gets her monthly transfusions," she continues. "Working online allows me to care for my daughter in the way I'd like to, and also be at in her home all the time for her. This allows me to travel for hospital needs, but still be able to be a part of a profession I'm enthusiastic about, without stress. ."

Her subsequent travels were her own creations.

Once people complete The Reset, they have the option of entering the three-month course known as The Purposeful Actor. The Purposeful Actor journey is a three-hour session for twelve weeks. "The students here have a bit more on their own in terms of accountability and proving themselves. They still have some practices that they must follow daily and they shouldn't be relying on me to accomplish it. They have to find their own goals, and that is why they are here." Jo shares.

Jo will also be hosting Q&A sessions through the journey of The Purposeful actor that occur every 3 weeks. Once people have successfully completed the Purposeful Journey and are ready, they can opt to sign up for a year-long membership called BAMF Actors In Action, which is a reference to Bad-Ass Mom of F***king Actors In Action. "I started this program because those who have completed these two walks wanted to keep working on the route," she says.

The membership has been running for four years and it offers a content-based session a month as well as group activities through weekly pods, weekly Q&A with Jo, and a six-hour summit once every three months. "The membership helps people determine how they're going to go out in the world to accomplish what they're supposed to be doing, to connect to the world of work, develop the content they want to create, and improve their craft," she explains.

She has coached artists of all kinds

According to Jo she believes that the majority of her clients in her journeys are actors. There are other types of artists, including dancers, writers storytellers, and singers, and even regular folks who "want to move through their conditioning," such as mothers and professionals like pro athletes television hosts, pro athletes, and therapy professionals. "Freedom is a concern to anyone who wants to be fully expressed," she says.

Since the journeys are offered in English, they attract people from around the globe. "We have people from all continents, but mostly America, Europe, and Australia," she shares.

The majority of her listeners are in the 20-50 age bracket. There are also people who are in the third phase of life join, and it's not unusual for her to welcome those who are in their 70s or 80s into her journeys.

The client let her do the talking

When it comes to advertising her travels, Jo says the word has spread mostly via words of word of.

On the home page of her website, she's embedded a video testimonial reel. It provides social proof and increases the credibility of the work she does. Visitors to her website can subscribe to her newsletter via her site. To collect email addresses, she offers a couple of free workshops as lead magnets: Stop Trying To Be A Good Actor So You Have the Chance of Being Excellent as well as The Instinctive Actor. In addition to helping aid in collecting her readers' details, they also offer individuals a chance to experience how she coaches.

She also has an Instagram page, which has more than 10,500 followers--and gets external press by interviews on various blogs, podcasts, and magazines.

She picked a value-for-money price

Jo is determined to ensure that her travels are cost-effective for everyone, as actors typically earn a fluctuating salary. "If you attended an acting class once per week, it would cost you between $300-$400. The majority of time, you'll sit down and watch others perform the scenes, and at times, you get the opportunity to play," she said.

"These online travel options are a much cheaper alternative," continues Jo. "The benefits of our travels is 10 times what we offer the journeys for." ."

The Reset costs below $1,000 USD. Purposeful Actor costs $1,250 USD and membership costs $270 USD per month.

She was in the zone of the greatest genius

Although she's the chief Of To Be Or Not To Act, Jo is firm in wanting to only spend more time with her inner creativity, which is in coaching and writing material. Jo doesn't think she's tech-savvy and prefers to remain "in the flow" doing what she does best. "The remaining tasks of running a business I'm not interested in because it's not my area of expertise," she says.

Jo says her success is due in the beginning to a coach she hired in the beginning. In the end, when it came time to design everlasting journeys and she decided to take a chance and enrolled in a class of $20k to help her do it. "It was an enormous amount of money, and I had to borrow half of the money. However, I'm happy that I was able to do it," she shares.

She believes that it's possible for anyone to create a successful online course business. But, she advises that this isn't an easy task.

"It requires dedication and perseverance, and you have to be really passionate about what you do. For me, it's all I've ever done since changing jobs in my 20s, and it's all I'll ever undertake. It's because of this passion that when it gets tough and I'm not going to give up. ."

Her creation was born from her heart.

She suggests online creators be honest about the difficult effort they'll create an online enterprise. She suggests that you only take on the task in the case that the subject matter they're presenting is close to their heart.

"The risk now is when you go on social media, everybody is a coach and everyone claims that you can make millions in a matter of seconds, but that's not the case," says Jo. "It is a fact that if you hold something you are passionate about, you can reach people who are bigger than that of your neighbors. But it takes legwork, as well as falling, and getting back up again. You need to be coached, and putting in your time and money until your foundation is in place. ."

As Jo, when you build a business from your heart It provides you with the strength to persevere through the hard times.

"An online company isn't merely an opportunity for you to earn profits. It must be constructed out of your soul, from what you're meant for doing. Otherwise you will drop the ball because it will be too difficult to handle." she shares.

"If you're doing it for the right reasons, you'll be ready to tackle the challenges. If you're out there for a quick money grab it won't be possible to accept these challenges. The best advice I can give is to stick with your passions to you. You must be the best at the job you're doing because of a high level of rivalry. It is essential to be confident in what you're doing. ."

She remained in integrity with her craft

In response to questions about trending in online courses that we could observe in 2024, Jo believes that there will continue to be a surplus of online programs. She believes that the major difference between "McDonald's" courses and the "gourmet" classes will be those that are created in a way that is honest.

"When there's an abundance of stuff, there'll be two types of online work. There will be McDonald's style courses and then there'll be the high-quality Gourmet courses. Everyone is going to have a program to do something or the other with your life that won't come out of a genuine source There will be people who've been doing it for a long time," she says.

In order to create the perfect gourmet experience, her recommendation is to return to your heart.

"There is incredible potential to anyone with a firm foot by their hearts and desires to give back," she continues. "The individuals who need the services you can provide will be able to find you ."

"I'm happy that it allows us to bond as human beings with what is important to us. It's incredible."
