Mixed media artist - The CreativeMindClass Blog
"Let's begin by defining the adjectives which most accurately describe me: bold creative, expressive and multi-layered."

Claudia's family background
"My Name is Claudia Melchor, I am formally trained as an architect. However, I've always had a love for painting and the 2D media since I could recall."

How did you transition the concept of architecture into mixed-media images?
"When it came time to make a decision about my career, I was also advised by other people, not to take up a career in the arts. And I listened. After completing a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Architecture and being utterly dissatisfied with my work front of the computer. Then , during my gap year following university, I began to create illustrations, paintings as well as products that had my designs on them, and I've never been better!
It all took off right when I was offered a position in an architecture office, which I now juggle with my illustration career and my new studies of art and history. I'm hoping to be able to drop the position of corporate architect in the near future and focus fully on the art I love as well as using mixed-media methods.

I'm hoping that my experience will help people who are undecided about what to study to realize that the art degree isn't important. You are an artist regardless of every background. And the most important thing is, this will create a unique art. Naturally, attending an art institute is a wonderful time!"

What would you say about your illustration style?
"I believe that describing your personal style is a difficult task. I was forced to talk to my acquaintances about this and their descriptions of it couldn't be more accurate. The way they described my work is like my paintings are being moved by the wind as if it can be seen blowing over the painting and dropping color on everything it touches. There is no better way to describe the effect honestly.
I enjoy layering textures and playing with lots of colors, I am the ultimateist in this regard. The harder I try to constrict a color palette, the wider the spectrum of color gets.

If we look at some of my subject choices, my favorite things to paint are landscapes containing mountains and oceans, because it brings me back to my hometown Tenerife, a quaint little island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.
In addition, I create human-like characters that have exaggerated features as well as vibrant skin. Of course, I always include an architectural component - those six years of studying architecture will be visible in my work."

What are the most important factors in creating your mixed-media illustration?
"I think that the most important thing for me to create my work is not to plan ahead too much. To be fair, this method can work but it can also fail However, not being excessively about what will happen allows you to be free to explore your art.
I like seeing the process of coloring and painting and changing my mind when I finish my work. It shows my relationship to the paper, to my surroundings, as well as to the paint. You are able to trace my decisions in the finished piece.

I like being able to get my hands dirty and mix my personal paints. The only thing you require to create my art is a lot of various materials (doesn't need to be anything expensive, but I prefer mixing different mediums) as well as a flexible hand and a willingness to mix paints and to start at the beginning."
