Mixed media artist The CreativeMindClass Blog
"Let's begin with the words to most accurately describe me: bold creative, expressive and multi-layered."
Claudia's background
"My name"is Claudia Melchor, I am officially trained in architecture, however, I've had a passion for art and 2D mediums ever since I could remember."
How did you transfer the concept of architecture into mixed-media images?
"When the moment came to decide on a career I was also advised by numerous others, to not take up a career in the arts. The advice was well-informed and I followed. Then I graduated with a Bachelor and Master's Degree in Architecture and being utterly dissatisfied with my work behind the computer. Then during my gap year at university, I decided creating illustrations, artworks and other products that featured my own designs, and I had never felt more content!
It all took off right when I was offered a position at an office for architecture that I currently manage with my illustration career and my recent studies in art historical studies. I hope to get rid of the corporate architecture job in the near future and focus fully on my passion for art-making and using mixed media techniques.

I'm hoping that my experience will help people who are undecided about the best course of study. I hope it helps you realize that the art degree does not matter, you could be an artist from every background. And the most important thing is, this will give your work a distinctive look. Of course, attending an art college is a wonderful experience as well!"
What would you say about the style of your illustrations?
"I think describing your own style is something extremely difficult. I was forced to talk to my acquaintances about this and what they said about the style couldn't be more precise. They said my art looks as if everything I paint appears moving like the wind can be seen blowing over the painting , and then dropping colors on everything it touches. There is no better way to describe it honestly.
I love layering textures as well as exploring a variety of colors. I'm an extremeist in this sense. The harder I try to constrict a color palette and the more expansive the range of colors becomes.
In a glance at my subjects choices, my favorite things to paint are landscapes containing mountains and oceans, as it reminds me of my home town of Tenerife, a quaint little island that lies in the Atlantic ocean.
But I will also create human-like characters with over-the-top features and vibrant skin. And of course, I always include an architectural component - those architectural studies that I completed over the course of six years must be represented somewhere."
What's the secret to making your mixed-media illustrations?
"I believe that the key for me to create my work is not to plan ahead too much. To be fair, this approach can be successful however it is not always successful However, not being over the end result will allow you to explore your art.
I like seeing the process of coloring and painting , and of changing my mind on my final work. The work reveals my connection to the paper, my surroundings, as well as to my paint and you are able to trace my decisions to the end result.
I love being able to play with my hands and mix up my own colors. The only thing you require to be able to recreate my artwork is a variety of various materials (doesn't require anything fancy, but I do enjoy mixing media) as well as a flexible hand, and some courage to apply paint layers and begin with a blank canvas."
