Small-scale business owner in Brooklyn Carmen Ladipo, her interest in baking grew from an early age. "I've had a sweet tooth since the time I was a kid," Carmen tells . "In my middle school days, I was in an class which was similar to Home Economics, where we were taught to make cookies. After I realized how I could satisfy my desires for sweet treats in my own manner, and after that it was over."

But it wasn't until several years later that Carmen could earn profits from her enthusiasm, starting a small batch cookies online business in the background. "I'd moved from my hometown of birth and was now in New York City, and I was trying to figure how I could make friends with a mature age," Carmen says. "I could be a part of the local climbing club and I would provide cookies for climbers and other staff members--a truly effective method to meet new people." After having been "fervently motivated" often to advertise her cakes, Carmen took advantage of an extra hour between work to register her own food-related business in Brooklyn.

"It was originally an excuse to be paid to bake cookies to friends who were in the vicinity at times," Carmen jokes. "But over the last 5 years, Carmen's Cookies has grown to an online shop that allows me to ship cookies all over the United States for strangers as well as friends."

We spoke with Carmen about how she prioritises the social and ecological effects of her business the way she manages her solo business while juggling other assignments and responsibilities, and the tools she employs to help her make Cookies run smoothly.

Community development in local areas and the impact on society

Visitors to Carmen's Cookie's Carmen's Cookie website as well as the social media outlets are instantly greeted by the warm and welcoming character of the brand. The tagline reads "Providing pleasure for your bonding." Carmen's selections include seasonal flavors like the ras el-hanout and matcha lemon. They also have beloved traditional flavors like the brown butter chocolate chip along with the orange clove. You only need to take a short glance through the reviews of her cakes to see how much satisfaction these sweets are to everyone around the world.

From the beginning, Carmen's Cookies has always been more than selling cookies. "I believe that food-related business owners are responsible towards the planet and to their communities to consider the effect they can have upon their local communities," Carmen says.

"There are a myriad of resources that go into creating and selling food products that are worthy of recognition and scrutiny so that they do less environmental damage. For this reason I'm aware of where I get my ingredients as well as how the manufacturers have a perception of their own ecological and social impact." Carmen is open on her site regarding how she obtains the ingredients she uses. On her site, you can even find an interactive tool to find out where her baking chocolate from.

And her commitment doesn't stop here. "It's essential for me to figure out ways to support the efforts to promote food justice in the larger Brooklyn community,"" Carmen says.

"Every each year, I select an organization that works directly with its local community for growth and economic and food sustainability. I contribute a part of the profits from the previous year's sales to these charities because I want Carmen's Cookies to have an impact on the place it calls home." Customers can always check out the website's About Page for more information about which charities Carmen has been donating part of her profits.

"As to our Carmen's Cookies community," Carmen adds, "it's an inspiring experience to see customers join together in the support of various causes throughout all of the time. Facilitating the transfer of the hundreds of dollars that we have donated to various regional and national charities that support food justice communities through cookies is an enormous achievement."
