When it came time to write her latest novel, Cult Classic, writer Sloane Crosley didn't find inspiration in just one place. She was certain that she wanted to take a meaningful study of dating and love however, the parts of her story came from everywhere including personal research and an abandoned synagogue in the Manhattan's Lower East Side.
This combination of resourcefulness and creative thinking is the reason that can help Sloane cope with the variety of needs of an experienced writer. Find out how Cult Classic had its writer rereading the cult manifestos. Cult Classic tells the tale of Lola, a magazine editor in New York who, though she's engaged recently, has an unease about her relationships. One evening, she meets an ex-boyfriend--and another, and another. Lola quickly realizes that a cult run by her former boss is deliberately putting these ex-lovers in her path as part of an investigation. The story that follows is an entertaining and thoughtful narrative about revisiting the past and, maybe, making peace with it.
Sloane isn't able to pinpoint an exact "aha" moment for the concept behind the novel however, her personal experiences with wellness culture as well as modern dating went into the novel. "I believe that everyone reading this will be the ultimate wellness and dating experts by now," she says. "We're completely absorbed by these topics, that they can appear as satire in the form of a novel."
Sloane did some particular reading on cults in order to get those particular details precisely perfect. "I required manifestos or guides from inside the cult, so I could borrow from the language to make a comedic point," Sloane says.
