Latest: US judge warns Google that significant changes are to be applied in the event of Illegal Play Store Monopoly -
U.S. District Judge James Donato is advising Google that big adjustments will be made to its Android app store following an appeals court ruled that it was not legal to operate one-stop access to the Play Store. Play Store operates as a monopoly, which is unlawful.
According to the Associated Press reports that Judge Donato has said that he might ask Google to let multiple stores for apps which are compatible with Android devices. The idea is to reduce Google's influence over the distribution of its apps as well as the billing process on its platform. The monopoly Google has which is under "nearly all authority" generates billions annually for Google but the decision of the court could alter the process, with Google anticipating costs of up to 600 million dollars.
Google is concerned about its potential to open it's Play Store to third-party app stores. This could expose users to security issues that could cause an issue Google describes as "security disturbance. " The judge Donato pointed out the necessity to make a major modification, saying "We are going to remove the barriers and that's the situation."
It is part of a wider antitrust campaign against Google as well as one of the major cases that involve its Google search engine, which is scheduled to be launched in September. The judge is hopeful of granting an order outlining the needed changes to Google's Play Store in the next few months and maybe during the week prior to Labor Day.
A piece that was published in The Verge on the same issue provides a list with Epic Games which are benefiting from the results. The article also includes an introduction that states "Judge James Donato will issue his ruling based upon the conditions Google provides - and Epic will receive it in the next few days."
