An integral part in the process of making geometric illustrations is the anticipation of undetermined outcome. Marc insists that each shape and every colour choice will trigger an emotional reaction in the shape and colour that he has previously sketched. Optic illusions, fake shadows transitions from flatness into spatiality, seemingly simple aspects - when exhibited at the Ampersand Gallery in Portland last year, they amazed the viewers.

Geometric Illustrations Lesson

  • No pencil drawing beforehand.
  • Get started on the outside by sketching a silhouette of the background.
  • Imagine what's on the inside.
  • Do not overburden it with too many information.
  • Play with the given parameter.
  • Create an unreal shadow by making an illusion optical.
  • Aim for creating harmony.
  • Constantly react to the previous drawing.
  • Do small drawings.

"My Name is Marc David Spengler, I'm 25 years old, and currently reside in a suburb in Stuttgart, Germany. Since the age of a child, I've always been drawing a lot. I remember when I was in the fifth grade, I wrote that one of my goals was to be a car artist. In the next few years at the age of 12 I got into the art of graffiti which has been a huge inspirational source for me ever since.

What is the reason artists choose to use geometric shapes?

It's not my turn to be an artist creating real graffiti today, but I'm observing geometric patterns every day on social media, magazines as well as books. When I finished school in 2014, I began learning about in communication design in the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart which is where I'm studying today in the class of Patrick Thomas.

Besides my studies and research, I'm also working on exhibits, brand collaborations, and my sketchbooks. In terms of my style of illustration I'm working mostly on abstract geometric patterns and bright colour combinations that attempt to blend into the frame I've created for myself. My goal for every composition I'm creating is to achieve harmony.

How do you create geometric art?

For creating geometric art I'm not doing a pencil drawing beforehand, so a lot of my drawings are imaginary. I love to begin my work in the outer space by drawing a background silhouette, before imagining what might be happening on the inside. This is why I am constantly responding to the shapes I've drawn previously and this makes the process interesting to me because I also don't know how it's going to look like in the end.

I like making smaller geometric drawings because they give me an easier view of the design and I am less likely to overdo it with too many specifics. When I'm drawing, I love playing with parameterslike creating an unrealistic shadow or creating an optical illusion, as everything is possible within the 2-dimensional realm."
