Digital illustration process - The CreativeMindClass Blog

When I'm free I enjoy doing 30 minutes- 1 hour study or explorations, where I just do whatever I think I'm feeling during the day. It was a huge help in my development, however it also made me realize which things I liked.

Today, I am able to focus on the color of light as well as how to convey things in a way that is simple so I don't have to get too specific with every aspect. My preference is to maintain my designs pretty close to real life However, as time goes on, I'm hoping to expand my shapes and be more stylized with my art.

When I start a painting, typically, I prefer to sketch out the basic shapes initially, either using BW or straight in the color. If I think it's essential to start by drawing lines first. Once I have a good base I like to map into the light shapes as well as shadow shapes onto separate layers. Not until then do I begin to create or render the image, usually going from big to the smallest of particulars.

In the Streets of London painting I used a similar process. In order to have neat edges and keep everything well-organized, I employed a large number of layers and also had the main light layer on a separate layer.

Layers also help me feel less anxious about making mistakes, but when I'm comfortable with the stage I'm in with the painting I start to combine a couple of aspects, while keeping only those things that I believe are necessary.

For me, colours are much a "feel" aspect, and I just go for what feels right. There are a variety of references which I use to assist me in choosing the correct colours. Sometimes I blend references but other times I use mainly the same.

It's definitely a good idea to study colour and light theory, so that you are aware of what can do to make your overall colour palette and values more pronounced.

It's a bit difficult to pinpoint what the secret to creating my work... I like to experiment with various styles, media and subjects and am inspired by other artists.

I'm only a few months into my artistic journey that I is still trying to determine my identity as an artist, and my personal style. What's different these days is I don't really worry about it as much I did in the past and I'm sure that's making an enormous difference.
