If I have time, I love to do 30 mins up to one hour of research or other explorations in which I do what I want to accomplish throughout during the day. This has not only helped me develop, and also allowed me to discover the things that I enjoy.
Nowadays, I'm able to pay attention to lighting, color and the ability to describe the different textures clearly in order to not need to overdo it in any of it. My goal is to keep my work very close to what's happening in the real world. However it is my intention to intend to push the boundaries of shapes and get more artistic with my art.
Before I begin painting generally, I prefer placing the basic figures first in BW or straight in the colour. If I feel it's necessary first, I begin with linework initially. After I've established an adequate base, I map in the light shapes and shadow shapes on separate layers. After that I sketch or draw the image in various styles, from large to the most minute of details.
For the Streets of London painting I employed a similar method. To ensure neat edges and keep everything organized I used many layers. Additionally, I had the main light on as an extra layer.
Layers help me think less about getting it wrong. Once I am comfortable in the state of the painting I start to combine a couple of things, only keeping those items that I consider to be essential.
For me, colours are an "feel" element, therefore I just go for the one that feels good. Additionally, I've got several reference sources that I look through to help me choose the right colours, sometimes I blend references, but occasionally I simply use the identical.
It's always a great idea to be aware of colour and light theory, so that you are in the know about what you can contribute to making the color scheme overall and its value more pronounced.
It's difficult for me to define what is it is that makes my work... I love to play around using different techniques, styles as well as subject matter and be inspiration from other artists.
I'm still so early in my creative journey that I'm still looking for my unique identity as an artist and also what style I prefer. One of the biggest changes I've noticed is that I don't need to contemplate my work as deeply than I used to , and I believe this has led to significant improvements.
