about pursuing challenges and changing creative career direction

Prior to moving to London in the year 2017, I was in a tiny town in Germany and was employed in the area of After Effects animator. Although there weren't many obstacles in my creative abilities, my skills deteriorated rapidly and I was really frustrated.

Making the move to London and getting acquainted with all the wonderful animation folks in the city gave me an enormous increase. I felt like "Damn I'm running alongside the cool children . It's time to put on my most professional."

Following my visit to the 2019 Pictoplasma Conference, I decided to join the world of fascinating creators of characters. I quickly realized that my characters work better when they're 3D and I'm learning through experience which is hard but it's also very satisfying!

My work caught the attention to Greenhouse Animation, who is currently acting as my director by them.

About the X-Files project, as well as the mystery behind socks vanishing

One of the very first projects I did using my new style was my Covered by Lemonade clip.

Lemonade Insurance approached me to make a piece to go with its current Instagram collaborative with artists. The company's role is as an insurance company for content, the idea of cute everyday items at risk popped into my brain. It's how the X-Files concept was born.

The last winter I was in locked down watching the entire x-files, so involving abductions by aliens of the classic kind seemed natural. The problem was that all characters had to remain in the same location to remain in the same place to stop the looping animation for them to be actually taken away. That's when I had the idea of making the washing machine open and the one pink sock ascend to the UFO.

When I was creating the UFO and providing it with legs, I saw the way things can be sucked up into. The UFO is now without its shoes and is working to retrieve it!

I have found that creating the perfect story can be done when you combine different things that may seem incompatible initially. For me, making something surprising take place and to also create a sense of character for objects through the use of humorous images onto their surfaces, is the most fun for me!

Details about the animation workflow

The process of creating my work begins with sketches of characters, as well as an outline of the story. I changed the animatic into Lemonade to convey the concept as well as the time. After that, I get in Cinema 4D and model all my characters. This is also where I try out the different products I choose to use, and also create styles frames.

Once the animation within Cinema 4D is done, I transfer it to After Effects for compositing and the finalization. The pink light beam, as an example, was created by using After Effects.

Regarding audio effects, and in concert in conjunction with Phill Brookes

This was the first time I worked on with the sound designer Philip Brookes who was a true rockstar! His contribution elevates the footage up to an entirely new level, and ties everything together perfectly! It was an amazing task that I'm eager to make many more like it!

We've talked to Phil about the process he uses for making sounds to be used for his X-Files project. Read the full interview of Philip Brookes.

In the present, I'm learning new techniques for character rigging and creating beautiful texture using Cinema 4D and Redshift. I'm currently experimenting with the mix of 2D as well as 3D animation, and I'm eager to find out how far my quest into character design will take me in the future!

Tips for artists for altering your career direction

Tips I have those who are looking to switch directions:

  1. Find which technique is most suitable for your requirements and learn about it! Moving design is a process that feels like you're required to know everything you can about. It's not possible.
  2. Your uniqueness should be taken seriously and do not minimize your uniqueness. Your distinctiveness is unique. Your artistic voice is unique.
  3. Accept your thoughts. Whatever is taking place inside your head, take it into consideration. Then, you can make your own!
