She describes her move to London and her experiences at the Pictoplasma conference and how she got a job as director for Greenhouse Animation. In addition, she discusses the details of her X-Files project, which was created by Lemonade Insurance, and explains the workflow of her animation studio and the way she collaborated with Sound designer Phil Brookes.

Eva provides tips for visual artists who are looking to switch their career, including selecting the method that best suits their ideas, embracing their individuality, and taking their "weirdness" seriously.

About seeking new challenges and a change in creative career direction

Prior to moving to London in the year 2017, I lived in a small town in Germany and worked as an After Effects animator. There weren't many creative challenges My skills slowed rapidly and I was extremely frustrated.

Moving from London and getting to know all the wonderful animation folks in the city gave me an enormous motivational boost. It was like "Damn I'm with the cool kids . I've better crank up my stuff."

Following my visit to the 2019 Pictoplasma conference, I made the decision to become part of that community of innovative character designers. The realization came quickly that my characters function best when they're in 3D - something that I'm still learning and it's hard, but also very enjoyable!

My work was noticed by the folks of Greenhouse Animation, and now I'm represented as director for them.

About the X-Files project and the secret of socks that disappear

One of the first clients I worked on with my brand new-found style was the Covered by Lemonade clip.

Lemonade Insurance approached me to create a work to accompany its ongoing Instagram artist collaboration. As the business is a content insurer, the idea of cute household objects in danger immediately occurred to me. This is how the X-Files project came to life.

The last winter, I was on lockdown rewatching all of the x-files. Therefore, the idea of a classic alien abduction seemed to be logical. The problem was that all characters had to be at the same place at the time of finalization in order to stop the animation loop so none of them could really be abducted. That is when I had thought of making the washing machine pop open and the one pink sock move towards the UFO.

As I was creating the UFO as well as giving it little legs, I realized how everything could get sucked into. The UFO is missing its sock and is retrieving it!

I find that creating a good story works best by combining diverse things that may seem incompatible at first. Making something unplanned happen and to give inanimate objects a personality by sticking silly faces on them , is the best way to have fun to me!

 The animation workflow

My process always begins by drawing sketches of my characters, and then the creation of a storyboard. I turned it into an animatic for Lemonade to help communicate the concept as well as the time. Then, I get into Cinema 4D and model all my characters. Also, this is the time I try out different the materials I use and create style frames.

Once the animation within Cinema 4D is done, I then switch to After Effects to do final touches and compositing. For the pink light beam for instance, is created using After Effects.

about the sound effects and working in conjunction with Phill Brookes

This was my first project I worked on with sound designernamed Philip Brookes, and he really took it to the next level! His contribution elevates the footage into the next level, and ties everything together perfectly! This was an incredible project to work on and I'm hoping to create more of this one!

We've spoken to Phil about the process of making sounds for the X-Files project. Check out the conversation of Phil Brookes.

At the moment I'm working on learning techniques for character rigging and creating stunning textures using Cinema 4D and Redshift. I experiment with combining 2D animation with 3D, and I'm excited to see what direction my journey into character design leads me to next!

Artists can get tips for changing a career direction

A few tips that I would like to offer to anyone who wants to alter directions:

  1. Discover which method suits your needs best and take the time to learn it! Working in motion design feels as if you have to be aware of all there is. It's just not feasible.
  2. Be serious about your oddness and never downplay the significance of it. Your peculiarity is distinctive. Your artistic voice is unique.
  3. Accept your thoughts. Whatever it is that's taking place in your head take it on and create the most of it!
