For coach Becky Mollenkamp the choice to end being a "shoulder" has changed everything. Even her professional career.

Becky helps people make the transition from "small owner" to CEO, and build viable businesses that don't burn out. Through her Gutsy Boss brand, she has assisted thousands of customers determine their own "shoulds' and define success on their criteria.

There are more than 20 years of experience as an entrepreneur in addition to her work, including owning a six-figure content marketing company before launching her own coaching company in 2015.

Recently, we spoke with Becky to learn more about the way her business has developed in the past couple of years as well as reflect on her creator journey. "What drove me to taking up coaching was my brother's passing in the year 2010 due to an overdose fatally caused by heroin. It really shook me awake from my sleep," Becky explains.

"I lived a life that was filled with "shoulds," and following the same routines and doing all the things you're required to do. It made me realize that my life is way too little to have a lifestyle that's not what you actually desire."

"I wasn't sure what I wanted. But I knew I wasn't interested in that," Becky remembers. The writing business she was working for closed and went back to her family's home. The time came to do the internal investigation to find out what she was going to spend what she wanted to do with her future.want her future life look as.

Becky began to build her writing company. "It was something I was familiar with and what I was good in. But I realized what I really wanted to accomplish was assist others in breaking out of their'shoulds'."

So she started coaching.

"I discovered that I can help people with the same stuff that I've had to deal with. That's why I concluded that that's what I'm supposed to be doing. It's what I'm called to accomplish."

Becky's experience as the owner of an agency and her an increased desire to aid others has made Becky's unique outlook an ideal match to coach your mindset.

"I'm not a strategic planner or an advisor anymore, but instead a coach. So I help people come to their own decisions and their own knowledge of aspects they'd like to see happen in their lives or business, and then help them move forward on the path to achieve that" Becky explains.

As a way of helping people to live their values better, she also incorporates her personal beliefs to her work. "I'm female-focused coach, which means that I honor lived experience as well as being aware of trauma. My coaching philosophy is about kindness, and not blame and shaming."

Inspired by her own experience and expertise, Becky began building her coaching company online -- however, it was not without a lot of 'shoulds', too.

In response to questions regarding the challenges in setting up her own coaching business, Becky laughs. "There weren't any challenges that I didn't have. I believe I faced every challenge."

"The most challenging part of the first was understanding the possibility of slowly shifting from writing a business into a new business." She focused on shifting her workload by 25% per year. In the first year, she had 25 percent writing, and 25 percent coaching percentage coaching. "Honestly that's only the second year in which there's no writing," Becky tells us.

"That was a long and slow process. Allowing that and then releasing the guilt about it, and letting it go can be the ideal and most efficient way for a company to get started, instead of feeling that they must go to the fullest or don't believe in their abilities."

Becky had a hard time making herself chief executive officer to appreciate the importance of her position and appreciate that she was part of something bigger.

"You may be a self-employed and an individual entrepreneur, and you might be the owner of a smaller-sized company through the use of a couple of consultants . However, you're still in charge, you're the chief executive officer and the visionary," she emphasizes.

"It's about having confidence making a presentation that states, 'I've got the skills. I'm capable of doing this.'"

This change will be an impact on Becky's bottom line too.

"You cost more for coaching because you are charging more] and you require an individual to generate exactly the same amount of money from these guidebooks for $7 or even a course valued at 200 dollars. There must be a variety of courses and guides so I'll be able to offer a greater number of people to choose from my list as only a fraction of those who purchase merchandise." The clients of coaching tend to share their colleagues, leading to more revenue opportunities as a result of coaching.

But, Becky plans to continue offering her services to a wider audience even if it's not an ideal fit for her new one-on-one coaching.

"I'm keeping running my business the way I've always run it. This is Gutsy Boss. I'm also helping businesses as well as individuals," Becky explains. "I am not going to let them in the dust. I've had the privilege of working with many people over a long period of time and most of them subscribe to my podcast or have been added to my email lists."
