8 Metrics Every Course Creator Needs to Follow The 8 Metrics Course Creators Should Track

Sep 1, 2022

The course creators are constantly looking for ways to improve their courses. One of the most effective ways to do this is to be attentive to the students.

However, the issue is that many of the students you teach won't be able to let you know what's happening in your course. They'll leave, stop their account, or even complete the course only to disappear but you'll never know what happened to them.

Tracking online course metrics helps to determine what students are thinking about your course, and the ways to improve it.

It's not just about counting the number of students who complete a course. No course will have an exact completion whenever life happens, or if a learner's motives change or the circumstances alter.

Let's look at the eight online course metrics you should be tracking and how you can use the data to improve the quality of your courses.

Progression and Performance of Learners

      Metric 1 the Course Progression

On a basic level the students who complete your course at a good pace are most likely enthusiastic and involved. That could indicate strong course design that you can duplicate or show to other students.

When monitoring course progression, consider asking these concerns:

  • What is the time it takes for the learner to complete a class?
  • How quickly do they advance throughout each lesson and topic?
  • What concepts seem easy but which are difficult?
  • If they are consistently dragging the course, what can I do to make it clearer?

Learner Satisfaction And Approval

      Metric 2: Exit surveys

The fact that a student has completed a course doesn't mean they loved it. Consider sending out an assessment after the course is completed (and once learners know their opinions won't impact the final grade.) A quick exit survey can capture initial impressions.

      Metric 3: Course evaluations

      Metric 4: Instructor's effectiveness

Even the most experienced instructors can waver when presenting online courses. Check in on how instructors are responding to student requests, and also how they're communicating with your students. It is particularly important to monitor if instructors change however, not the content of the course. Is there a difference in engagement?

      Metric 5: Discussions and Comments

Online discussion threads provide a wonderful opportunity for learners to work through materials together, and to feel the sense of being part of a community. Examine group discussions to see the way that learners discuss and engaging with the content. An amount of participation on the board of discussion could be a sign of validity!

Learner Competency And Proficiency

      Metric 6: Quiz Scores

Metric 7. The quality of assignment submissions

The complexity and the quality of your assignments will help you gain the sense of whether students are engaging with your course. If you can, provide learners their own feedback after each task (or look over the feedback the instructor leaves). This will help you determine the ways students can overcome obstacles. This can lead to higher rate of success (and reviews!) for learners who have individual needs.

      Metric 8 Certifications and Retakes

How long will learners remain enrolled in your course, and are they returning for more? What percentage of them complete the course with a certification or need to take the test again? An impressive completion rate is an easy statistic you can track without needing students to provide you with an in-depth exam.

Does Your LMS Feature Customizable Metrics?

  • See a snapshot of assignment and enrollment status after logging in.
  • Monitor real-time student progress and track how students move throughout the course and keep tabs on scores from tests.
  • You can manage assignments by approving or removing assignments
  • Run advanced reports and export course data to CSV or Excel files. CSV or Excel file
